People go through life in search of who they really are through experience. I believe it holds true for artists as well. We’ve seen many artists re-make their sound and hold their breath when the release date rolls around knowing it will make or break them. What many fail to realize is although artists are people, they have even more sides to them that they can discover over time.
After a decision to change the Sore Losers line-up we’ve grown to know and love, Brown and Blue each took separate roads while continuing to pursue their passion of Music. The anticipation of their first projects post-break up stayed at an all time high and the pressure was on.
Brain Gang Blue, also known as King Blue, is already a well established producer in the hip-hop world. Known for his work with TDE member Kendrick Lamar and up and coming Dallas Duo A.Dd+, he’s also been in the studio himself.
When first listening to the Numb EP I went into it with an open-mind and unbiased ear. Within the first few minutes, Blue‘s undeniable production captivates you, that boy got skill.
What I loved about this EP is his ability to take his new school sound and incorporate it with old school cuts. There’s nothing more dope than a younger artist showing respect for those who paved the way.
A few of the tracks that I loved were More Friends & Friends using the Pimp C sample off Three Six Mafia‘s Like A Pimp, and cleverly using Soul II Soul‘s original sample with the track titled Back To Reality. A few other tracks I took an extreme liking to were At My Funeral, Taste Testing, and Fuck The Noise. (Yes I realize that’s almost the whole EP). My only complaint is Taste Testing really was a taste test, the track needs to be longer, gon’ make that happen.
The sound of hip-hop is constantly evolving but I truly believe Blue is going in the right direction with his first solo EP. Can’t wait to hear more of what he has in store.
