The Report Card Review: Kidd Wes It’s Only A Mixtape

Published on November nd, 2011

Pro’s:
Kidd Wes has a very versatile delivery, and that’s a good thing. I think he may still be trying to find which suits him best, so more power to him.

Used instrumental’s that a lot of folks will be familiar with so they’re more likely to listen. Don’t over-do it though.

I loved the Outro on this album, it was my favorite track. I felt like it was really Kidd Wes the artist and not someone just spitting over instrumentals for shits and giggles.. Next project please bring more like that.

Con’s:
I think we could have gone without the Intro. It’s not necessarily bad but it does remind you of the old school Outkast skits. If you’re gonna remind folks of anything Outkast, you gotta come with it or don’t come at all.

Pass Out – This track had a lot going on, maybe a little too much which would make it hard to enjoy. Different parts of the song would be dope as their own individual cut.

I’m On One – I forgot I was even listening to the mixtape for a second. It mimicked the original track with Drizzy, Ross, then Wes. If I were him, I would have took a little more time to write a few more bars and spit over the entire instrumental. They want to hear Kidd Wes, not songs they can catch every 10 minutes on the radio, you feel me?

My Last – rapping over the Big Sean and Chris Brown Instrumental.. but sounding very Big Sean-esque. Now would be a good time to play on the diversity of your flow. We don’t need two Big Sean’s in the industry, set yourself apart.

Overall Grade:

Not a bad MC but any means, but with the right producer artist collabo I’m sure the next project can do a much better job at showing the world who Kidd Wes really is as an artist.
